Council meeting snapshot for 9 June 2026

At our Ordinary Council Meeting on Tuesday 9 June, Councillors considered key topics focused on community safety, social inclusion and environmental sustainability.

Advocating for stronger action on antisemitism and social cohesion

We endorsed our submission to the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion.

The submission outlines how antisemitism is affecting people in Glen Eira and the impacts it has on community safety, participation and social cohesion.

The submission draws on what we are seeing in Glen Eira and highlights the need for stronger coordination across all levels of government.

Key recommendations include clearer responsibilities across government, improved information sharing and dedicated funding to support local prevention and response initiatives.

Commitment to Preventing and Responding to Homelessness

We endorsed a new Commitment to Preventing and Responding to Homelessness.

The Commitment formalises our existing approach and clearly outlines our role in responding to homelessness. It focuses on providing support safely and respectfully, connecting people with appropriate services and working with partners to coordinate responses.

It features practical guidance for community members on how to respond when someone is sleeping rough, helping reduce the risk of unsafe or unintended harm.  The Commitment sets out how we can best support people experiencing homelessness while helping ensure responses are safe, respectful and consistent.

Canopy Tree Protection Policy and Guidelines

We progressed updates to the Canopy Tree Protection Policy and Guidelines.

Since the introduction of new Victorian Government planning controls, different approval pathways have created inconsistencies in how application fees are applied.

To address this, we are considering a local law permit application fee aligned with the existing planning permit fee.

The update sees changes to the policy and guidelines to make information clearer and easier to understand.

Together, these changes aim to create a more consistent and transparent process for applicants while supporting the longterm protection of Glen Eira's tree canopy.
