Getting Off Gas

We’re upgrading Council buildings to run on renewable electricity, reducing emissions and creating more sustainable community facilities.

In 2020, we joined hundreds of councils around the world in declaring a climate emergency. Since then, we’ve been taking practical, measurable action to reduce our carbon emissions and care for our local environment.

Our Getting Off Gas program is a key part of this work. The program focuses on upgrading Council-owned buildings, so they no longer rely on natural gas and instead use renewable electricity. This includes replacing gas heating, hot water and cooking systems with modern, efficient electric alternatives.

The program began in 2024 and will continue through to 2031.

Gas currently accounts for around 60 per cent of Council’s total emissions, making it our largest source of pollution. Moving away from gas is one of the most effective ways we can cut emissions and work towards our goal of zero direct Council emissions by 2031.

This work supports our Climate Emergency Response Strategy, which guides how we reduce emissions, protect the environment and create safer, more liveable neighbourhoods for our community.

All Council electricity is already sourced from 100 per cent renewable energy through the Victorian Energy Collaboration (VECO). By switching buildings from gas to electricity, we ensure these facilities operate with zero electricity related emissions.

A major milestone in the program is the upgrade of the Glen Eira Sports and Aquatic Centre (GESAC) — our single largest source of emissions.

Frequently asked questions

What this means for the community

Upgrading Council facilities to run on renewable electricity helps create healthier, more sustainable places for our community. By reducing emissions from Council buildings, we’re improving air quality, lowering long-term operating costs and investing in modern, efficient facilities that people use every day. This work supports our commitment to climate action, protects community health and wellbeing, and helps build a cleaner, more resilient Glen Eira — now and for future generations.

Will facilities stay open during the works?

We know community facilities are used every day and we’ll work to minimise disruptions.
Where possible, works will be staged so facilities can remain open. If temporary closures or changes are needed, we’ll let users know and there will be more information on this webpage with details.

Want to get off gas at home or in your business?

This work is part of a broader shift happening across our community. If you’re interested in reducing your own energy costs and emissions, there are rebates, resources and support available to help households and businesses move away from gas. For more information, click here.
