Statement from Glen Eira Mayor Cr Anne-Marie Cade on waste charges

Glen Eira City Council delivers a range of highly valued waste services to keep our City clean.

Whether it’s our kerbside collection, public bins, hard rubbish collection, or community education, our community consistently tells us waste is one of our most important and valued services.

To pay for these valued services, Council has always acted in a manner consistent with guidance from the Victorian Government around levies and charges.

We’re aware that very recently, the Victorian Government released new guidance around how we should approach our waste services.

Like all councils across Victoria, we are working through the implications and we’ve requested clarification on a range of areas.

Importantly, we will never make rushed decisions around our budgets, charges and services.  If we are proposing change, we will share information and seek the community’s feedback.

Like other councils, we’re still learning what the impact of the Victorian Government’s new guidance will be.

What we do know is any changes to our waste charges would happen through our annual budget process, and through meaningful consultation with our community.

Because here in Glen Eira, we’re committed to transparent decisions and highly valued services. In fact, it’s the first strategic direction of our Council Plan.

Right now, we’re also undertaking one of our biggest ever community engagement programs — which is all about the future of our waste services. Future Waste, Greener Glen Eira is seeking views from people from across our community to inform our future waste contracts and approach for the next decade.

We are taking the time to really understand what our residents and businesses value.
