Victorian councils stand united against antisemitism and hate

Yesterday, the Mayors of Glen Eira and Port Phillip met with the Mayor of Waverley to formally hand over Victoria’s Statement of Solidarity — a statement signed by most mayors across the state and endorsed by councils across Victoria.

The meeting was an important moment of unity and leadership, bringing together local government representatives to stand with the Waverley community, share support and reaffirm a collective commitment to care, inclusion and community wellbeing.

Victorian councils are standing together against antisemitism and all forms of hate, grounded in the shared values of respect, safety and social cohesion — values that matter most when communities are facing challenges.

Local government leaders have a unique role in times like this. Councils are closest to their communities and are well placed to listen, work collaboratively and provide leadership that brings people together.

The Victorian Statement of Solidarity sends a clear and united message: hate has no place in our cities, and inclusion and safety are non-negotiable.

As part of the visit, the mayors also met with Jillian Segal AO, Australia’s Special Envoy to Combat Antisemitism, to discuss the importance of national collaboration and the role of local government in fostering safe, cohesive and inclusive communities.

Waverley was deeply impacted by the recent Bondi attack. This meeting was about standing alongside the Waverley community and affirming that councils across Australia are united in care, compassion and inclusion.

Standing against antisemitism is part of a broader commitment to reject all forms of hate and racism. Every day, councils work to strengthen social cohesion through programs, partnerships and leadership that help people feel safe, respected and connected.

Our message is positive and proactive: local government leaders are working together to support communities and demonstrate that unity matters — especially in difficult times.
