Statement from Mayor Cr Dr Simone Zmood welcoming a Royal Commission

Glen Eira City Council welcomes the Australian Government’s announcement of a Commonwealth Royal Commission into antisemitism and social cohesion.

This is an important and decisive step. The horrific terrorist attack at Bondi Beach shocked communities across Australia and highlighted the urgent national need to respond and stamp out the factors driving antisemitism and hate crimes.

Glen Eira is the cultural home of Victoria’s Jewish community. We know firsthand the impact of antisemitism and the importance of strong, coordinated action to keep our communities safe and united.

We commend the Australian Government for listening to communities and acting. The Royal Commission will provide independent scrutiny, examine systemic issues, and deliver recommendations to strengthen social cohesion and prevent future tragedies.

In Glen Eira, we will continue to work closely with Jewish community organisations, Victoria Police and other councils locally to do our part in bringing people together, promoting social cohesion and combatting antisemitism. This collaboration with our partners is vital to ensure that our community remains safe, inclusive and respectful.

Glen Eira stands ready to contribute to the Royal Commission process and ensure the voices of our community are heard. We will keep working with all levels of government to uphold safety, inclusion and respect for every person.
