Notice of Intention to Review Councillor and Mayoral Allowances

Council is to undertake a review and determination of the level of the Councillor and Mayoral allowances.

At its Ordinary Council Meeting held on Tuesday 6 April 2021, Notice is hereby given under sections 74(4) and 223 of the Local Government Act 1989 (Act) that Glen Eira City Council is to undertake a review and determination of the level of the Councillor and Mayoral allowances as prescribed by section 74(1) of the Act.

Section 74(1) of the Act requires that a review of the Councillor and Mayoral allowances must take place within the period of six months after a general election or by the next  30 June, whichever is later.

For Glen Eira, the current allowance ranges and limits equate to the following amounts pursuant to an Order in Council dated 13 November 2019:

  • Councillor: $13,123–$31,444 plus 9.5 per cent (9.5%)
  • Mayoral: A maximum of $100,434 plus 9.5 per cent (9.5%)

All allowances are taxable.

Submissions

Any person may make a written submission under section 223 of the Act and is entitled to request in the submission that the person wishes to be heard in support of their submission at the Council Meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday 8 June 2021, or to be represented by a person specified in the submission.

Submissions must be received no later than 5pm on Friday 7 May 2021 being not less than 28 days’ after the date of publication of this public notice.

Written submissions should be marked “Councillor and Mayoral Allowance Submission” and sent to the Co-ordinator Councillor Business, Glen Eira City Council, PO Box 42, Caulfield South, VIC 3162

Submissions may also be delivered to Council’s Glen Eira Town Hall — Service Centre, corner Glen Eira and Hawthorn Roads, Caulfield, VIC 3162, emailed to CrMAR@gleneira.vic.gov.au or CRMayoralAllowanceReview@gleneira.vic.gov.au or submitted using the form below. 

All submissions will be considered in accordance with Section 223 of the Act.

Submissions made under section 223 of the Act are not confidential and:

  • will be incorporated in full (including all personal information) into the agenda for, and minutes of, the Council Meeting at which they are considered;
  • will be available on Council’s website as part of the relevant agenda and minutes; and
  • must be made available for public inspection in accordance with the Act.
