Night-time cat curfew to help protect our wildlife and pets

Following strong community support, Council adopted a night-time cat curfew at its meeting on Wednesday 5 October.

Under the new curfew, cats must stay on their owner’s property between 7pm and 6am. A 12-month transition period will help owners adjust and prepare their cats for the change.

The curfew aims to protect native wildlife and keep cats safe from traffic, fights and disease. Cats that stay indoors at night tend to live longer and healthier lives — and curfews can help reduce nuisance behaviours like yowling and spraying.

More than 3,000 residents shared their views during consultation in June 2025, with 68 per cent supporting a curfew. Community feedback highlighted protecting wildlife, keeping cats safe, and encouraging responsible pet ownership as the top reasons for support.

The first 12 months will focus on education and support. We will share practical advice, run workshops and partner with animal welfare groups to promote affordable microchipping, desexing and cat containment options.

The night-time curfew supports Glen Eira’s Biodiversity Plan and Climate Emergency Response Strategy, helping to create a safer, more sustainable community for people, pets and wildlife.
