Future Waste, Greener Glen Eira

We worked with the waste industry and Glen Eira community to develop smart and sustainable solutions for our future waste services.

We have awarded four new major waste management contracts to experienced waste providers. We strive to provide a reliable and customer-focused service that supports a good quality of life in Glen Eira, and these contracts will support just that.

Glen Eira Mayor Councillor Simone Zmood said waste is one of the biggest services that we provide as a council and a top priority for our community.

“We know how important it is that these services continue to be reliable and easy-to-use,” she said.

But we also know our community is sustainability-conscious and that expectations will evolve over time, as will the waste industry. In our Future Waste, Greener Glen Eira engagement last year, our community told us that they want us to think outside the box when it comes to waste solutions.

That’s why continuous improvement, flexibility and innovation were a big part of the development of these contracts.

Over the contract term, we’ll be exploring and trialling innovative services like the collection of hard-to-recycle items, waste collections from apartment blocks, and a resale shop for reusable hard waste.

We’re also refurbishing and keeping our existing 20 rubbish trucks until they reach their end of life. When that happens, we’ll replace them with a fleet of more fuel-efficient vehicles, including some hybrid or electric vehicles.

In the meantime, we’re already acting on some of the community’s ideas to reduce waste, like our Repair Café pop-up series, with plans to investigate more.

Importantly, these new contracts won’t cause any changes to the current kerbside waste collection, but the community may notice new trucks or improved services over time.

We know the community values the waste services we provide. Residents rely on them daily, whether at home or out and about — and they help ensure sure we have a clean and liveable community.
