New all abilities cricket pitch at Moorleigh Village

The upgraded space now features a purpose-built, accessible pitch — giving our all-abilities cricketers a safer, permanent home for matches and training.

Glen Eira’s commitment to inclusive, welcoming open spaces continues with the opening of a brand-new all-abilities synthetic cricket pitch at Moorleigh Village in Bentleigh East — the first of its kind in Glen Eira and Australia.

The new pitch was officially opened on Sunday 31 November by Mayor Cr Simone Zmood, fellow Councillors and representatives and players from the Melbourne All-Abilities Cricket Association, marking an exciting milestone for inclusive sport in Glen Eira. We’re proud to celebrate this achievement with our community and partners.

Previously, the Melbourne All-Abilities Cricket Association and Moorabbin Cricket Club relied on temporary surfaces to play. Now, they have a dedicated, safe, and permanent space to enjoy matches and training. The Moorabbin Cricket Club and the Melbourne All-Abilities Cricket Association will call the ground home.

The pitch is wider and longer than a traditional synthetic wicket, with flat turf extending on both sides to support safe running between wickets and consistent, level run-ups for bowlers — making the game safer and more enjoyable for everyone.

Construction included excavation of the existing surface, installation of a 28-metre x 3-metre concrete slab, and laying synthetic turf for a durable, all-weather finish. The works were completed by Turf Renovations Australia on behalf of Council.

Recreation spaces like this help create and build community connection and encourage healthy, active lifestyles. This upgrade reflects our commitment to creating open spaces that are inclusive, accessible, and welcoming — it gives more people the chance to enjoy cricket and feel part of their community.

We look forward to seeing Moorleigh Village become a hub for inclusive cricket and community connection. It’s a proud milestone for Glen Eira and a big step toward inclusive sport.
