Following the adoption of a night-time cat curfew at the Ordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 5 November 2025, it will soon be a requirement that cats must remain on their owner’s property between 7pm and 6am. 

During these hours, you must ensure your cat is at home and safely contained on your property.  

We know this is a big change for cats and cat owners, so before the curfew comes into effect in late 2026, we will be supporting you to make the transition through education and support programs. 

What you need to do 

Think about the best way to keep your cat safely contained during curfew hours. You may need to consider one or more of the following: 

• Adjust your cat’s routine 

• Keep your cat indoors 

• Build an enclosure or cat run 

• Cat-proof your property 

• Use indoor enrichment or stimulation strategies

Why you need to keep your cat contained 

It will soon be a legal requirement to keep your cat on your premises between 7pm and 6am. If your cat is found off your property during curfew hours, it may be impounded by Council officers. 

If we can’t reunite your cat with you immediately, it may need to be taken to the animal shelter. You may be required to pay a fee to collect it. Additional fees may apply if your cat is unregistered.
