An update from the Mayor on events in Bondi

Like all Australians, I am absolutely horrified by the events in Bondi on Sunday.

The Premier and Prime Minister have now confirmed this was an antisemitic terror attack. Sixteen lives have been lost, and the toll may rise. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the Bondi community as they face unimaginable grief.

Glen Eira is the cultural home of Victoria’s Jewish community. Many in our community will be feeling deeply shaken and distressed. To our Jewish community: we see you, we support you and we stand with you in solidarity. This is your home, and you belong here.

We condemn antisemitism and violence in all its forms. Hatred has no place in our city, and no place in our country.

We are working closely with Victoria Police who have assured us there is no need for alarm in Melbourne. As a precaution, they are increasing patrols in Caulfield and across Glen Eira for a more visible presence. These measures are about reassurance and safety, and we thank Victoria Police for their swift response.

This tragedy comes at a time when many in our community are celebrating Chanukah. Chanukah is a festival that symbolises light triumphing over darkness. It is heartbreaking that such darkness has overshadowed the start of this season of hope. But we can still honour the spirit of Chanukah by standing together and rejecting hate in all its forms.

Now more than ever, our role as a council is clear: to bring people together, to promote social cohesion, and to work toward a more inclusive community. Every day, we’re working to strengthen Glen Eira and help stamp out antisemitism and hate. We will continue to stand united against violence and division.

Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy. Please look after one another and rely on updates from trusted sources.

Glen Eira will fly its flags at half-mast today as a mark of respect.
