Advocating for Glen Eira across Victoria

Last week, Glen Eira joined councils from across Victoria at the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) State Council to discuss the challenges and opportunities facing local government.

Councils debated 65 motions covering issues including planning and housing, community safety and wellbeing, open space, waste and recycling and the financial pressures facing councils.

Glen Eira put forward two motions, both focused on areas where stronger Victorian Government partnership and investment are needed:

  • Strengthening the State-local partnership on homelessness, including better coordination, clearer referral pathways and support for place-based responses.

  • Fair funding for Maternal and Child Health and immunisation services, recognising the important role these services play in supporting families and community health.

Both motions were supported and will now inform the MAV’s advocacy on behalf of Victorian local government.

The MAV holds two State Council meetings each year, bringing councils together to debate shared priorities and help shape the MAV’s advocacy on behalf of Victorian local government.

At the previous State Council meeting in May, we put forward motions on planning reform and strengthening social cohesion and responses to antisemitism and were pleased to see both strongly supported by councils across Victoria.

With the Victorian state election approaching, it was a timely opportunity to strengthen our collective voice and reinforce the importance of local and State government working in partnership to deliver better outcomes for our communities.

Thank you to the MAV for bringing councils together and continuing to provide a strong, collective voice for local government.
