16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence

We are proud to join councils across Victoria in supporting the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence campaign — a global initiative that runs annually from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day).

This campaign is a call to action for communities everywhere to help prevent and end gender-based violence. In Australia, more than one in three women have experienced violence by a man. While not all disrespect leads to violence, every act of violence against women begins with disrespect. Respect is the foundation of safe, equal communities — and each of us has a role to play.

Our Commitment

As part of our broader commitment to preventing family violence, we have refreshed our Prevention of Family Violence Statement of Commitment — a values-based approach grounded in respect, equity, and safety.

It guides our actions and aspirations to build a community where everyone feels safe, supported, and treated with dignity.

What’s happening in Glen Eira

We’re committed to building a community where everyone feels safe, supported and respected — and that includes taking action to prevent family violence and violence against women.

Throughout the 16 days we will be:

  • Sharing resources at Council sites and community hubs to promote understanding of what respect means, what it looks like, and how to practise it in everyday life.
  • Lighting Glen Eira Town Hall orange from 25 November–10 December to show support for victim survivors.
  • Taking part in the Walk Against Family Violence on Friday 28 November 10am at Birrarung Marr Melbourne.
