Sharing local impacts and recommendations to the Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion

As a Council, our role is to help create an environment where everyone feels respected and has a genuine sense of belonging. Contributing to the Australian Government’s Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion through our submission is an important way for us to share what we are seeing locally, and the impact antisemitism is having on community wellbeing and participation.

As the home of Australia’s largest Jewish community, Mayor Cr Dr Simone Zmood, said it was important that the voices of local communities were heard as part of the Royal Commission.

“Antisemitism is not an abstract issue for our community. It appears in everyday places — on our streets, in our public spaces and in the way people feel about participating in community life,” she said.

“Our submission sets out what local government can do, and what we need from other levels of government to respond effectively.”

We are recommending a nationally led social cohesion framework with a clear focus on antisemitism, stronger coordination across all levels of government, improved information sharing, and dedicated funding to support locally led prevention and education initiatives.

Cr Zmood said national leadership was essential to ensure consistent and effective responses.

“Local government plays a critical role in prevention and community connection, but we cannot do this work alone,” she said.

“Clear roles, shared responsibility and sustained funding are essential if we are serious about preventing antisemitism and strengthening social cohesion, not just responding when incidents occur.”

The Royal Commission as an important opportunity to strengthen national coordination and reaffirm our commitment to safe, inclusive and welcoming public spaces for everyone in Glen Eira.
