We’re exploring the idea of a cat curfew — and we want to hear what you think.
We’re committed to making our community safer, more liveable and more biodiverse. As part of this commitment, we’re looking at whether a cat curfew could benefit both our feline friends and the wider environment.
More than 5,000 cats are registered in Glen Eira, and we know how important pets are to local families. Most cats in our community are well cared for and live in loving homes. However, cats can be at risk of injury, disease or getting lost when allowed to roam, especially overnight. They can also create noise and nuisance, damage gardens, and have an impact on native birds and other wildlife.
In 2023, more than 80 cats were impounded in Glen Eira. Research shows that curfews can help reduce these risks, giving cats longer, healthier lives — while also helping to preserve native wildlife and reduce nuisance behaviour in our neighbourhoods.
Our neighbouring councils, including Port Phillip and Bayside, already have cat curfews in place. Now, we’re asking our own community to help shape what might work best for Glen Eira.
We’re seeking your input on three possible approaches:
We committed to exploring a cat curfew as part of our Domestic Animal Management Plan 2022–2026, which followed strong community feedback in support of keeping cats — and local wildlife — safer in Glen Eira.
This is your opportunity to help shape our future approach to cat safety in Glen Eira. Your feedback will help inform Council’s decision on whether to introduce a cat curfew, and if so, what form it might take.

We’ll keep the community updated on next steps and how your input contributed to the outcome. Let’s work together to protect our pets, support local wildlife and create a more liveable Glen Eira.
