Murrumbeena Park – masterplan implementation

A new full-size multipurpose court is planned for Murrumbeena Park to support growing demand for basketball and netball.

What’s happening

Council is planning to deliver a new full‑size multipurpose court at Murrumbeena Park to help meet growing community demand for basketball and netball. The project builds on the endorsed Murrumbeena Park Masterplan and previously approved concept plans.

Project funding and status

This project is listed in Council’s endorsed Advocacy Priorities 2025-2026. Delivery of the full project scope is subject to Council securing funding. Timeframes and scope may be refined as funding outcomes are confirmed.

What’s being delivered

  • Full‑size multipurpose court for basketball and netball
  • Provision for sports lighting
  • New and improved pathways
  • Relocated shelter and BBQ facilities
  • Seating and informal spectator areas
  • Landscaping and additional tree planting elsewhere in the park

Why the court location has changed

Further design work confirmed the former Bute Street car park cannot accommodate a full‑size court in the preferred orientation without significant impacts.

The updated location:

  • Retains important boundary trees
  • Improves pedestrian connections through the park
  • Allows the court to function as intended

Changes to the former Bute Street car park

  • The car park will be removed
  • The area will be converted to landscaped open space
  • Informal recreation will continue, including dog off‑leash use
  • New trees and seating will be added to improve park amenity

How this fits with the Masterplan

  • The Murrumbeena Park Masterplan was developed with the community and endorsed in 2019
  • A multipurpose court has always formed part of the long‑term vision
  • The project balances active and passive recreation across the park

Frequently asked questions

Will this affect dog off leash areas?

Dog off‑leash use will continue in Murrumbeena Park.

The former Bute Street car park area will remain available for informal recreation, including off‑leash use. This helps balance space when organised sporting activities are taking place elsewhere in the park.

Will trees be removed?

The project has been designed to minimise tree removal.

  • The updated court location helps retain key boundary trees
  • Additional tree planting is included
  • Landscaping will improve shade and park amenity over time

Project timing

  • Design development: 2026
  • Construction expected: 2027

Timing is subject to funding, approvals and weather conditions.
