Noise pollution

Neighbourhood noise pollution is a common problem for many residents particularly those living in inner urban suburbs.

Residential noise

The Environment Protection (Residential Noise) Regulations 2018 list specific types of equipment and times their use is prohibited. 

Group 1 — Motor vehicles, lawn mowers and more

Types of noise:

  • Motor vehicles (but not when entering or leaving a site)
  • Lawnmowers or other grass-cutting devices
  • Any equipment with an internal combustion engine not listed in group 2.

Prohibited times:

  • Monday to Friday before 7am or after 8pm
  • Weekends and public holidays before 9am or after 8pm

Group 2 — Power tools and more

Types of noise:

  • Electric power tools, chainsaws or circular saws
  • Gas or air compressors
  • Pneumatic power tools, hammers or other impacting tools or grinding equipment.

Prohibited times:

  • Monday to Friday before 7am or after 8pm
  • Weekends and public holidays before 9am or after 8pm

Group 3 — pumps, vacuum cleaners and more

Types of noise:

  • Home heat pumps
  • Swimming pool, spa or water pumps except when used to fill a header tank
  • Home heaters (including central heating and hot water systems)
  • Vacuum cleaners.

Prohibited times:

  • Monday to Friday before 7am or after 10pm
  • Weekends and public holidays before 9am or after 10pm

Group 4 — air conditioners

Types of noise:

  • An air conditioner, evaporative cooler or split system used for cooling*

Prohibited times:

  • Monday to Friday before 7am and after 11pm
  • Weekends and public holidays before 9am and after 11pm

*Air conditioning noise is exempt from the residential noise regulations during a heat health alert.

Group 5 — musical instruments, stereos and more

Types of noise:

  • Musical instruments
  • Electric audio goods, including stereos, radios, TVs and public address systems

Prohibited times:

  • Monday to Thursday before 7am or after 10pm
  • Friday before 7am or after 11pm
  • Saturday and public holidays before 9am or after 11pm
  • Sunday before 9am or after 10pm

Group 6 — other electrical goods

Types of noise:

  • Electrical goods not in group 2, 3 or 4, including gardening tools
  • Not equipment for personal care or grooming, or for food heating, cooling or preparation

Prohibited times:

  • Monday to Friday before 7 am or after 8 pm.
  • Weekends and public holidays before 9 am or after 8 pm.

What to do if your neighbour is making noise

Talk to your neighbour

The best approach is to work together with your neighbour to resolve the issue in a friendly way. Your neighbour might not know they are disturbing you.

If talking doesn't work

If your neighbour is not open to talking or is unreasonable:

Reporting other noise pollution

Call us on 9524 3333 for the these types of noise pollution:

  • Machinery and building sites
  • Registered food premises
  • Commercial premises and home occupations

For commercial and large industrial premises, contact the Environmental Protection Agency.
