We inspect street trees each year near power lines and program our pruning accordingly.
Trees and power lines
Glen Eira is home to more than 55,000 street trees. Many of these grow in close proximity to overhead power lines and are managed on a two year cycle.
Pruning is usually minor, as the previous year’s work sets the branch framework and we only need to remove regrowth. Occasionally a tree may need additional work, but the percentage is small. Other pruning requests are inspected on an individual basis by Council’s qualified arborist (usually within 30 days) to see if any works are required. Any urgent or emergency works are inspected as a priority.
Pruning of trees is undertaken by our contractors according to specifications of qualified arborists.

Why do you prune trees?
Electric line clearance works help prevent vegetation from growing too close to the power lines. If vegetation is too close to the power lines it can result in safety risks, such as electrocution, fires and the reduced reliability of electricity supply.
This pruning is also part of a legislative requirement to ensure that there is a clearance space maintained between power lines and the closest foliage of a tree.
Compliance for trees on private property falls under the same regulations, however it is managed separately by the relevant electrical companies.
Download our Electric Line Clearance Management Plan (PDF, 1.4MB), or get a hard copy between 8am and 4pm weekdays from Park Services, 730 Inkerman Road, Caulfield North.
