Glen Eira City Council Gallery Applications now open for 2027 and 2028

We are currently inviting applications for exhibitions in the Glen Eira City Council Gallery in 2027 and 2028. This is a Gallery hire opportunity assessed against criteria to complement curated programming. Applications close on 28 August 2026.

Overview 

The Glen Eira City Council Gallery is a large flexible space within the Glen Eira Town Hall. It has two gallery spaces, both with LED lighting and a flexible hanging system:

Gallery: 400 square metre exhibition space is available for hire by not-for-profit arts organisations, community groups, artist and textile collectives, schools and high-profile individuals. The Gallery is typically available for hire for a four-week period.

Gallery hire includes curatorial advice, installation assistance, and promotion of the exhibition on our website, social media and monthly newsletter.

Glen Eira City Council also has a Facility Hire grant program which can be accessed if your Gallery application is successful.

How to apply

Selection and criteria

Our Glen Eira Community Vision 2040 aims to “Promote and develop our creative potential, celebrating our diverse identities through art and other cultural expression”.

Who can apply?

Applications are accepted from not-for-profit organisations, artist collectives, schools, community groups and high-profile individual artists. Priority may be given to proposals that demonstrate capacity to activate the full Gallery space and attract significant public audiences.

The Gallery is a large, publicly funded exhibition space. Proposals should demonstrate the capacity to present a cohesive, high‑quality exhibition that is suitable for a fourweek presentation in a 400 square metre public gallery, including consideration of audience access, installation requirements, and public engagement.

Priority may be given to applications that:

  • Demonstrate a strong connection to the City of Glen Eira (living, working, studying, or thematically engaged)
  • Are led by or include First Nations artists and organisations, artists from culturally diverse backgrounds, artists with disability, or young people
  • Show the potential to activate the full gallery space and attract broad public audienc

Individual artists may apply where they can demonstrate the experience, profile, scale of practice, and organisational capacity required to deliver a major exhibition.

Selection process

Gallery exhibitions are programmed through a competitive Expression of Interest process.

Applications are assessed by Council officers with curatorial expertise against the published selection criteria, taking into account the overall balance and diversity of the Gallery exhibition program.

Assessment will be considered holistically:

  • Not all criteria carry equal weight for every proposal
  • The relevance of individual criteria may vary depending on the nature, scale, and intent of the exhibition
  • Consideration is given to artistic merit, public value, feasibility, and alignment with Council’s strategic objectives

Shortlisting may be informed by:

  • The quality and clarity of the exhibition concept
  • Evidence of professional practice and curatorial rigour
  • Suitability for a public gallery context
  • The applicant’s capacity to successfully realise the exhibition within the proposed timeframe

Applicants will be notified of outcomes by email. Due to the competitive nature of the program, submission of an application does not guarantee an exhibition opportunity.

Criteria

Applicants must address the selection criteria below.

  • Clarity of theme/concept of the exhibition. Demonstrates ability to create a cohesive exhibition
  • Appropriateness of the exhibition or the project to a public gallery space
  • Promoting innovation, excellence, creativity, inclusion, or diversity in artistic practice
  • Demonstrates high level conceptual thinking, aesthetics and technical skills
  • Local content or interest, connection to Glen Eira community
  • A clear target audience and approach to public engagement, including public programs that complement and expand on the exhibition theme
  • Proposal aligns with one or more of Glen Eira City Council’s community vision / objectives:
    • Celebrates the artistic and cultural diversity in our community including the evolving cultural values and established traditions of our First Nations peoples.
    • Fosters and promotes the artwork of young people across the primary and secondary school sectors
    • Supports the health and wellbeing of the community.

Application requirements

Note: The selection process is competitive and a place in the 2027 or 2028 Gallery program is not guaranteed.

  • Applications will be assessed against the selection criteria above. 
  • Where other activities (floor talks, workshops etc.) are included, please outline whether these are open to the public.
  • Shortlisted applicants may be invited to supply additional material.
  • Successful applicants will need to have Public Liability Insurance ($20,000,000.00 (twenty million dollars) in place and provide a Certificate of Currency before their exhibition commences.
  • Applicants will be notified of the outcome of their application by email within five weeks of the application deadline.

Gallery Two

Applications are now open for 2027

We are currently accepting applications for exhibitions in Gallery Two for 2027.

Gallery Two is a 20-square metre exhibition space with LED lighting and a flexible hanging system. The space is free for local emerging artists, schools and community groups to exhibit.

This includes curatorial advice, installation assistance, and promotion of the exhibition, including on our website and via our social media and newsletters. Exhibitions run for approximately four weeks. 

To apply, applicants must address the following selection criteria:

1.      Live, work, or study in the City of Glen Eira.

2.      Clarity of theme/concept of the exhibition.

3.      Appropriateness of the exhibition or the project to Gallery Two.

4.      Promotes creativity, innovation, inclusion, accessibility and diversity.

5.      Local content or interest and connection to the Glen Eira community.

Applications will be assessed against the selection criteria above. This is a competitive process and a gallery place is not guaranteed until assessment is finalized.
