2025–26 road upgrades

We look after 465 kilometres of roads — making sure they are safe, accessible and meet the needs of our community now and into the future. Read on to learn more about the planned road upgrades during the 2025–2026 financial year.

Upgrades to roads across Glen Eira help protect the safety of everyone who walks, rides, drives, or uses mobility aids in our City.

In the 2025–2026 financial year, we’re resurfacing and repairing more than 23 streets under our Local Streets Improvement Project to ensure they’re safe and accessible.

As part of the program, other operational work, like footpath renewals, kerb and channel repairs, drainage cleaning and street signs repairs, will take place at the same time to minimise impacts on residents. To support a greener Glen Eira, where possible, we use sustainable and environmentally friendly resources and processes as part of our projects.

Current works 2026

Upcoming crossing works in Elsternwick

We are preparing to build new threshold crossings in Elsternwick. These are slightly raised sections of the road at pedestrian crossing points, designed to make crossing safer and more accessible, and encourage drivers to slow down.

What's happening and what?

We are building the threshold crossings at intersection of Glen Huntly Road and Gordon Street, Elsternwick. Works are due to start on Monday 11 May and will be completed by 22 May, weather permitting.

What are the impacts?

Works will take place between 7am-4pm weekdays and some Saturdays between 9am and 1pm, if needed.

To safely complete the works, there will be temporary full road closures at Gordon street near the construction sites.

  • Detours and signage will be in place
  • Local access for residents and traders will be maintained via detours
  • Please follow directions from traffic controllers and signs in the area
  • Temporary safety barriers will be installed around the work sites
  • Kerbside waste collections will not be affected

Upcoming Intersection Traffic Lights works — Patterson Road/Tucker Road, Bentleigh

We’re installing intersection traffic lights at Patterson Road and Tucker Road intersection to improve safety for pedestrians and vehicles.

What’s happening and when?

We will:

  • install a new intersection traffic lights at the Patterson and Tuckers roads intersection.
  • lay new asphalt along the Patterson Road and Tucker Road intersection.

Works are due to begin on Monday 18 May and are expected to be completed by end of June to early July, weather permitting. The intersection traffic lights will be activated after construction by the Department of Transport & Planning and United Energy.

What are the impacts?

Works will take place between 7am to 5pm weekdays and 9am to 1pm on Saturdays, if required.

Partial Patterson Road, Tucker Road and Lahona Avenue closures

During construction, Patterson Road and Tucker Road will remain open but will operate under partial closures with traffic controllers managing vehicle flow. This means vehicles can still travel through, but delays are expected.

Patterson Road Tucker Road, Lahona Avenue, Surrey Road, Pollina Street, Mawby Road, Mortimore Street and Durban Street will be closed at times during the works including asphalting. We will provide exact dates and details before this happens and there will be traffic controllers onsite to support and direct traffic. During these closures, please park off-street or on a nearby street.

Residents and businesses can still access their driveway, except when construction or safety issues require a closure. Our contractor will let you know ahead of time if driveway access will be blocked or impacted. Please follow all traffic signs and directions from traffic controllers when travelling through the area. Pedestrian access to all properties will remain open.

Kerbside waste will continue as normal.
