Youth Engagement Team – Recruitment is open for 2026

Our Youth Engagement Team is due to re-commence in February 2026 with recruitment now open. If you are aged 18 to 25 and are an active community citizen of Glen Eira, you are encouraged to apply by submitting your expression of interest below.

The Youth Engagement Team is comprised of active youth advocates and leaders aged 18-25 who collectively provide a stronger voice to Council and create better outcomes for young people in Glen Eira.


The Team meet on a fortnightly basis throughout each term to engage in activities, initiatives and strategies that impact young people, including:

  • community engagement activities
  • co-designing a youth-friendly engagement toolkit for use across Council
  • co-designing a Youth Survey and infographic.


Members are provided with training and support to undertake their role in the team, with opportunities for members to nominate for leadership roles such as Chair and minute taker. This is a 10-month commitment that will further support your professional development and enable you to network with your peers in a safe environment.

Glen Eira City Council prides itself on being an inclusive and child safe organisation that promotes and protects the rights of young people. Council wants to hear and capture the voices of diverse young people in Glen Eira including culturally and linguistically diverse young people, LGBTIQA+ young people, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and young people with disability.

Please note: to be a member of the Youth Engagement Team you must live in the City of Glen Eira.


Achievements

In 2024 and 2025, the Youth Engagement Team accomplished several of its set key initiatives aimed at strengthening community connections and amplifying youth voices. Throughout the past two years, the team maintained active engagement with the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Victoria Police, and various council officers to foster collaborative efforts in supporting our youth. Key achievements include:

  • March – June 2024Successfully provided feedback on key Council plans and frameworks including: Future Waste, Fair Access Policy, Community Vision, Reconciliation Action Plan, Community Engagement Policy and Framework, Gambling Policy and Rooming House Policy.
  • July 2024 – Successfully facilitated discussions during the Community Safety Forum, bringing together key stakeholders and community members to address critical safety concerns.
  • October 2024 – Co-designed and delivered the 2024 Youth Survey, which gathered valuable insights from 464 respondents. The findings provide a solid evidence base for shaping future youth programming and services.
  • December 2024 Reported the 2024 Youth Survey findings to an Assembly of Councillors.
  • March – June 2025 – Successfully provided feedback on several Council plans: Parking Policy, Draft Elsternwick Club Concept Plan, Cat Curfew Policy, Vaping Prevention Project artwork consultation and a submission for Our Place, Our Plan engagement.
  • June – September 2025 – Co-designed and delivered the 2025 Youth Survey with insights received from 465 respondents.
  • December 2025 – Reported the 2025 Youth Survey findings to an Assembly of Councillors.

The 2024 Youth Engagement Team were chosen as 2025 semi-finalists for the 7News Young Achiever Awards VIC – The Victorian Government Group Achievement in the Community Award recognising the positive impact they have made in their inaugural year.

Is there an age limit?

This program is for young people aged 18 – 25.

Where are meetings held?

Meetings are held at the Bentleigh Library and Youth Hub, 161 Jasper Road, Bentleigh.

What time are meetings held?

Meetings are held every second Monday during the term 5.30pm–7pm with meeting dates set early in the year.

Are these meetings in-person or online?

These meetings are held in-person only.

What does the recruitment process involve?

Upon submitting an expression of interest, the Youth Program Lead will be in touch to discuss your application and answer your questions. Interviews will be conducted to ensure a fair process that also captures a diverse range of applicants.

When do applications close?

Expressions of interest are available throughout the year.

Do I need to live in Glen Eira to apply?

Yes, only young people who live in Glen Eira will be eligible to apply.

Will I be required to have a volunteer Working with Children Check?

Yes, all team members are required to hold valid volunteer Working With Children Checks.
