The health and wellbeing of our community, staff and visitors is a priority for us. We are doing what we can to continue to support you as well as comply with containment advice from the Australian Government.

Things are changing rapidly, and we will update this page as information becomes available.

What can I do if I have a question about my service?

Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, our Customer Service Centre at Town Hall is closed until further notice. We are still receiving and responding to requests and questions via phone and through online channels.

COVID-19 Hotline

Council has set up a dedicated, local hotline for residents and businesses looking for information, advice and support about COVID-19. The Hotline is available Monday to Friday from 8am to 5.30pm and until 7.15pm on Tuesdays.

The Glen Eira COVID-19 Hotline is staffed with Council employees and is available to assist the community in navigating official Commonwealth and State information, finding out more about local support services as well as responding to questions around Council’s response to the pandemic.

Call the Department of Health and Human Services’ dedicated hotline — open 24 hours, 7 days a week on 1800 675 398. Please keep Triple Zero (000) for emergencies only.

Our COVID-19 Community Relief and Recovery Support Directory aims to help the Glen Eira community know what support services are out there — State and Local services for food; personal hardship; psychosocial; accommodation, pharmaceutical assistance, health services and medical transport; and more.

 


Stay informed

COVIDSafe app

As restrictions are slowly eased, it is important to download the COVIDSafe app to help stay safe. The app speeds up the process of finding people who have been in close contact with someone who tests positive for COVID-19. Help stop the spread. Find out more or download the COVIDSafe app.

Coronavirus App

Stay up-to-date with the latest COVID-19 announcements by downloading the Australian Government’s coronavirus app. Search ‘Coronavirus Australia’ in the Apple App store and on Google Play or visit www.australia.gov.au

Multilingual resource

Migration Council Australia (MCA) has developed a Government sponsored multilingual resource for Australia’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities about COVID-19, its impact and available support. Response and Recovery Package

Councillors have endorsed a $7.3 million Response and Recovery Package to support residents and ratepayers during COVID-19.

Rates support

We will be supporting residents who are experiencing difficulty in paying rates because of the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. To find more visit, our COVID-19 Rates Financial Hardship page.


Sports and leisure

All facilities (GESAC, Caulfield Recreation Centre and Carnegie Swim Centre) are closed.

Your membership will automatically be placed on free suspension during the time that we are closed, so you will not be charged. Any fees paid in advance will be credited to your membership account.

We remain contactable throughout the closure period should you have any questions. We will also ensure we provide updates as they become available. In the meantime, you can keep updated via our website and social media pages.

Online workouts

Glen Eira Leisure has launched an online workout program — GEL Anywhere. You can choose from a range of exercises and workout in your living room, backyard, driveway, garage — anywhere! To access  these workout videos, including HIIT, Yoga, Pilates and Zumba.


Parks and playgrounds

The Victorian Government has announced new limits on gatherings — people should not gather in groups of more than 10, and stay 1.5 metres apart from others where possible.

Playgrounds

  • All playgrounds and fitness equipment are now open.

Skate park

  • The skate park at Bailey Reserve is now open.

Bookings

  • We will not be taking any bookings for our venues, parks or reserves until further notice.

We have turned off drinking fountains and barbeques to stop the spread of the disease. You can still utilise our grassed spaces across the municipality for exercise, including Caulfield Park and Pawfield Park located at the Wedge in Caulfield East. For cyclists, the velodrome and Packer Park in Carnegie remains open and if you are looking at somewhere to run, the athletics track at Duncan MacKinnon is available.

Note: Playgrounds will now be included in Citywide’s Working for Victoria cleaning blitz which is funded by the State Government. Council will also undertake regular cleaning of all playground equipment and other high touch surfaces. We strongly encourage the community to still take their own precautions and practice safe hygiene. For further information on the cleaning blitz, visit Citywide's website.


Libraries

All libraries are closed. However, you can make use of our free e-books, movies, digital magazines, e-audiobooks and e-newspapers — available online 24/7. Just download the Glen Eira Libraries app for free from on iTunes and Google Play.

We’re just working on the details about the best way to open our libraries and keep the community safe.  

We will open on the afternoon of Wednesday 3 June with no more than 20 people in at a time, with safe distancing and hygiene measures in place.

Rubbish and recycling

Waste, recycling and street cleaning services

These services are continuing as normal however, your bins may be emptied a little earlier than usual to allow drivers to stagger their start times. To reduce manual handling of bins, it would be helpful to place your bin for collection in a spot that won’t be blocked by parked cars, such as the edge of your driveway. Please continue to put your bins out the night before collection.

Advice for householders regarding COVID-19

Below are some guidelines you can include in your daily routine in regards to COVID-19.

If you take your bin to the kerb, make sure you wash your hands before and after you bring it back in.

If you take a bin out on behalf of others, make sure you wear gloves and dispose of them appropriately.  

For those with Coronavirus (COVID-19), put all of your usual items in your bin which goes out for kerbside collection. Wash your hands afterwards.

Please also put the following disposable items into a sealed plastic or paper bag, and place in your bin: 

  • tissues 
  • cleaning cloths 
  • masks 

Put the bag in general waste (not recycle or green waste) for kerbside collection. 

Put paper, cardboard and other recyclables that have mixed with the above disposable items into general waste as well.  

Wash your hands straight after handling disposable items or items that have become mixed with them.  

To help waste collectors: 

  • Compact rubbish - if possible - before putting it in your kerbside general waste bin. 
  • Don’t compact waste that is already in the bin. It may become stuck and not empty properly. 
  • Don’t overfill waste or recycling kerbside bins or put them where they may easily tip over or spill.  

Please also ensure you leave your bin in an unobstructed location.

There are a variety of services available in our community to help you and your family manage during this challenging time. Download our community contact information.

In-home support

We will continue to run our personal care, delivered meals and services for those on our vulnerable persons’ register, including shopping for essential items. We will also continue our property maintenance and our general domestic assistance program to provide essential services.

Residential Aged Care

For the continued good health of our community, as a precautionary measure to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, our Residential Aged Care facilities are in total lock down.

Community Care and Development

We have postponed older adults’ exercise, the Explorers program and group social support programs. The community bus service which runs on Mondays and Wednesdays, has been suspended. Alternative arrangements are being explored.

Community engagement

The Deliberative Community Panel meetings have been postponed until further notice — online communications and discussion will continue.

COVID-19 Community Action Grants

The COVID-19 Community Action grant program 2020 provides grants up to $10,000 to support community organisations that are experiencing hardship as well as offering assistance for programs that directly benefit the community.


Business support

We have complied a list of resources from the Australian Government, Victorian Government and other agencies to support Business.

One of Council’s Business Mentor volunteers, David Leonnon, has offered a downloadable resource — Urgent Business Rescue Strategies. David volunteers as a Business Mentor for Glen Eira and is a professional in Business Turnaround and Mentoring. COVID-19 Small Business Grants

Applications for the COVID-19 Response and Recovery Small Business Grants program are now open. Grants of up to $2,000 are available to small businesses for online technical and innovation support.


Family, youth and children

Maternal and Child Health

Our Maternal and Child Health Service is now conducting all consultations via phone. Priority is being given to:

  • New babies
  • two week Key Ages and Stages
  • four week Key Ages and Stages
  • eight week Key Ages and Stages.

You can call the Glen Eira Maternal and Child Health Hotline on 9524 3403 between 9am to 5pm, Monday to Friday and speak to a Maternal and Child Health nurse for advice and support.

Immunisation

Our immunisations sessions are running. However, for the continued good health of our community and as a precautionary measure to help prevent the spread of COVID-19, we have undertaken the following actions at our sessions:

  • the use of hand sanitiser
  • limiting one parent and child per session
  • implementation of social distancing
  • seating is to be 1.5 metres apart.

Youth Services

Our Youth Information Centre is now closed for drop-in-sessions until further notice. Young people can still access youth workers support via phone, video-chat or email.

Contact us on 9524 3676 between 10am to 5pm, Monday to Friday to make an appointment with one of our youth workers.

We have developed a Social Distancing Support Program, which aims to support young people through a climate that requires isolation as a means of community safety. The program will focus on one-on-one support, achievable goal setting (whilst social distancing) and referrals.


Planning

We are cooperating with a request from the Minister for Regional Health, Regional Communications and Local Government, to enable the delivery of essential stock to supermarkets outside of ordinary delivery hours. This will occur for a temporary period and we thank you for your understanding in light of the national challenge from the spread of COVID-19.
