New parents' guide

Glen Eira City Council offers many services and resources that can be useful for your parenting journey. 

We’ve compiled a quick reference guide of resources for early parenthood to accompany each stage of your child’s growth. The information below will give you an overview of the services available and where you can find relevant information available on our website. 

Newborns – 0 to 3 months

When you register your birth at the hospital they will advise Council and give us your contact details. This information is passed onto a Maternal and Child Health nurse who will arrange to visit your home.

For children from birth to school age

The Maternal and Child Health Service provides a free service for families for children from birth to school age. Services offered include parenting support and education, and child health and development.

Maternal and Child Health talks

Our free Maternal and Child Health talks offer invaluable advice for whatever stage your parenting is at. Topics include health and nutrition, sleep and settling.

Immunisation register

Your child's immunisation history

The Australian Immunisation Register (AIR) keeps an account of your child’s immunisations from birth to 19 years of age. An Immunisation History Statement will be sent to you when your child is one, two and four/five years of age.

Our new parents’ group gives first-time parents the chance to share ideas, form friendships and get helpful information.

Occasional Care

For preschool children

Occasional Care provides your preschool age child with the opportunity to socialise, play and learn in a supportive and safe environment. Operating from the Carnegie Children’s Multipurpose Centre, children from six months to five years can attend sessions on a term-by-term or casual basis.

Learn, make friends and have fun

Our centres create a warm and inviting environment for your child to learn, make friends and have fun. Centres are located at Carnegie, Caulfield and Murrumbeena.

Playgroups

Start or join a playgroup

Playgroups provide parents and caregivers with the opportunity to meet new people, gain support and exchange parenting ideas. They allow babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers to socialise as they play and learn together.

Toddlers – 1 to 3 years

Baby Time

Attend our free BabyTime sessions suitable for your baby/toddler less than three years of age. Stimulate their young mind with songs, rhymes, puppets and mini stories - available at all our libraries.

Immunisation

We provide free vaccinations for children in Glen Eira as part of the National Immunisation Program Schedule.

Parks and playgrounds

Explore, create, imagine, interact and reflect with your child in beautiful spaces. Playgrounds encourage physical activity and enable children of all ages and all abilities to interact with others.

Toy libraries

Toy libraries are a fabulous free resource. Joining a toy library is a great and affordable way to access a variety of quality new and traditional toys.

Four-year old immunisation

We offer free immunisation sessions for children aged between three-and-a-half to four years. Face painting, balloons and magic tricks are provided as entertainment, and all children attending these sessions receive a free show bag.

StoryTime

Visit the library

For preschool children aged three to five, StoryTime gives children a fun and relaxed start to their reading development and socialising before starting school. The 30 minute sessions include stories chosen especially for preschoolers, together with music, songs and action rhymes. All sessions are free.

GESAC Pre-kinder program

GESAC’s three to four-year-old activity-based program aims to enhance the development of social, creative and intellectual skills in children of similar ages and is ideal preparation for four-year-old kindergarten.

Learn to swim

GESAC Swim School

GESAC’s Swim School philosophy is that learning how to swim and water safety are vital life skills that should be enjoyed. We aim to pass on our love of swimming to all members of the program. GESAC’s program has been developed with a focus on small graded classes and recognition of individual achievements. This stepping stone approach ensures children learn with others at a similar level and progress as strokes and skills are completed.
