Structure plan for Bentleigh
We asked
In November 2016, we conducted an extensive community engagement program so your feedback could inform a major structure planning program for Bentleigh. Our goal was to ensure that we could articulate, plan and resource a clear vision for Bentleigh's future.
You said
We conducted six community engagement stages between November 2016 and December 2017, using a range of methods including:
- surveys
- online and in-person forums
- drop-in sessions
- email submissions.
During this process, we received 866 submissions and 237 people participated in community forums.
Your responses showed the key issues to be:
- heights of developments
- parking
- traffic
- building types
- development
- quality design guidelines.
We did
On 27 February 2018, we adopted the following shared, long-term vision for Bentleigh:
"Bentleigh will be an accessible, local shopping destination with a vibrant cafe and restaurant culture. It will maintain its community feel with open space, places for people to meet and gather and a broad range of local businesses, all of which will meet the needs of a diverse community."
This shared future vision guided the development of the Bentleigh Structure Plan 2018–2031. Its critical milestones for the present and future are to:
- reduce development pressure in residential streets
- develop a new ‘eat street’ to create a grid of public spaces instead of a strip
- address future car parking needs.
