| In 1998, Glen Eira City Council Gallery invited Caulfield photographer Jane Burton to photograph lounge rooms in the City of Glen Eira to portray the diversity in taste and attitudes amongst the population.
Residents and their lounge rooms were sought through an article placed in the Glen Eira News. Ten photographs were completed and exhibited in the exhibition Everyday at the gallery in June of that year.
Lounge rooms are often the showpiece of the house, sometimes not used by the family but kept for special visitors or special family occasions. As such, lounge rooms can offer insights into the way householders see themselves.
Jane Burton is known for photographs that explore the theatrical backdrop of hidden thoughts and feelings. Her images are often black and white and usually employ a film noir vocabulary.
Burton has exhibited in numerous Australian art galleries including the Art Gallery of South Australia, the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney, the Art Gallery of New South Wales and the Centre for Contemporary Photography. She studied Fine Art at the University of Tasmania in Hobart. | |
