Home>Schools awarded for environmental excellence
Bentleigh West Primary School and Coatesville Primary School have been acknowledged for their initiative and work in addressing environmental issues.
Both schools have been awarded Glen Eira City Council’s Award for Environmental Excellence in Primary Schools.
The perpetual trophy will spend six months at each school.
Now in its second year, the Award has been developed to acknowledge primary schools who have demonstrated outstanding achievement and initiative in developing and putting in place an environmental project for the benefit of the school or Glen Eira community.

| Council’s Environment Advisory Committee Chair Cr Steven Tang said Bentleigh West Primary School — who won the Award in 2008 — was awarded for their continued excellence in environmental sustainability and ongoing commitment to foster and share best practice.
“Bentleigh West Primary School is an accredited five-star sustainable school having integrated environmental sustainability into the school curriculum,” Cr Tang said.
“Vegetable gardens, revegetated wetlands, a dry forest, sensory gardens and drought-tolerant gardens have been established.
“Rainwater tanks and heating panels have been installed, worm farms formed and a recycling program implemented.”
Cr Tang said Coatesville Primary School has also integrated environmental sustainability into their curriculum.
“The school tracks their use of water, energy, paper, waste production and biodiversity levels using the School Environment Tracking System (SETS),” Cr Tang said.
Cr Tang said Coatesville Primary School has also implemented a number of water conservation measures.
“These measures include the retrofitting of bathrooms and the installation of three water tanks,” Cr Tang said.
“Students have also maintained an award-winning garden, which has been mulched and watered with harvested rainwater.” | |
