Good access is good for business

One in five people in Australia experience some form of disability — in Glen Eira that equates to approximately 29,000 people.
In the effort to promote an understanding of diversity in the community and support the development of inclusive communities, Glen Eira City Council, in conjunction with a number of other councils, has developed YouMeUs — Achieving Inclusion.
This series of short videos is available for businesses to learn how they can adapt their services and offerings to attract more customers with a disability.
Glen Eira Mayor Cr Mary Delahunty said people with disabilities — like everyone else — want to purchase goods and services and participate in community life with their family and friends.
"If your business is not accessible, you could be missing out on a significant proportion of customers," Cr Delahunty said.
"Making changes to your building and layout and increasing the understanding of your staff, all have the potential to increase turnover. Changes can be as simple as clearing aisles and training staff, or getting a portable ramp."
