    Footpath trading

We provide opportunities for traders to display their goods, advertising signs, tables and chairs along the footpath.

Under the provisions of the Glen Eira Council Local Law 2009 a permit is required for the placing of advertising signs, goods, tables, chairs, windbreak or associated furniture on footpaths.

    Obtaining a permit

    • Upon receipt of the application form, fill in all the relevant sections. Note: check your area under fees, ie. area one, two or three.
    • Read the fee structure and policy information, send your application form together with a copy of your public liability insurance ($10million) and site plan (the location and area you propose to occupy refer to Appendix page 15 in the Footpath Actives Guidelines) back to Council.
    • DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY we will invoice you after your application has been approved.
    • Upon lodgement of your application with Council (and providing all relevant details have been filled out correctly) an officer will visit your premises to determine the correct meterage or inspect the area you require, you will then be invoiced accordingly.
    • Upon payment your application will be processed and a permit issued which is required to be affixed to your shop window or similar.

Further information and an application form are available to download below, along with a copy of the Footpath Activity Guidelines.

Any questions regarding footpath permits, please contact us on 9524 3333.

    Footpath activity guidelines approved

The footpath activities policy and guidelines were reviewed and on Monday 27 November 2006 and Council approved the new policy. This now brings Glen Eira in-line with best practice guidelines issued by the Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission.

These guidelines came into force on the 1 January 2007 and any new permit application will need to comply.

Many councils have recognised the importance of providing a fair and equitable access policy which balances the safety of pedestrians and the benefits to traders in the display of goods on footpaths.

While acknowledging the importance of street trading opportunities for traders, traders must now be mindful that footpaths are an accessible right for all persons.

We are committed to ensuring that everyone in our community is able to enjoy the many social, cultural and business benefits of living and working in the municipality. This includes all people who live, work and visit the City of Glen Eira, including young people, older people, families, employees, employers and people with disabilities.

It is now time for Glen Eira traders to address the inconsistencies throughout their shopping centres and for Glen Eira to adopt a universal approach to suit the needs of the whole of the community in this shared pedestrian zone.

The essential key to an effective accessible pedestrian system throughout shopping precincts is the development and maintenance of a continuous accessible path of travel.
