Council is required to take 370 food samples each year from local food businesses operating in Glen Eira. Food sampling is undertaken by environmental health officers to assess the quality of products being sold to the public. Food sampling results can be used to identify food safety risks and to improve food handling practices and procedures.
Food sampling is also used to investigate and resolve complaints made to Council in relation to food poisoning and adulteration. Council’s food analyst can determine if bacteria that will cause illness are present in the food.
Food labelling requirements are governed by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ). Council will examine food products to ensure that labelling of food products complies with this legislation.
Council’s environmental health officers investigate all complaints made in relation to food products or food premises. Complaints made to Council include, food poisoning, food adulteration, poor food handling practices, unclean food premises and unregistered food businesses. All food poisoning and adulteration complaints must be reported immediately to Council by us on 9524 3333.
