Disability Action Plan

Glen Eira City Council aims to provide services and facilities that are accessible to all people who reside, work in or visit the municipality.
Council recognises that it has a responsibility to improve access for people with disabilities, because it is a:

• Planner of the physical environment, facilities and services.
• Provider of public infrastructure, facilities and services.  
• Purchaser of services.
• Sponsor of community events and groups.
• Source of information.
• Major employer in the City.
• Leader to business, industry and community.

The development of a Disability Action Plan has identified opportunities to enhance service and facility planning and provision, to eliminate barriers preventing participation and access by people with disabilities.

Key strategies of the plan include:

• Provide leadership in the Glen Eira community in promoting awareness, positive community attitudes and responses towards people with a disability.
• Meet obligations under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and other relevant legislation.
• Achieve a planned, co-ordinated and flexible approach to policy and service provision to reflect the need of people with a disability.
• Create opportunities, services and facilities which enable people with a disability, their carers and families to participate in the community and to attain a better quality of life.

This Disability Action Plan was developed in compliance with State and Federal legislation and Codes, including:

• Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (Commonwealth);
• Building Code of Australia (BCA);
• Australian Standards for Access and Mobility (AS1428 Suite of Standards);
• Equal Opportunity Act 1995 (State)
• Intellectual Disability Services Act 1986 (State);and
• Disability Services Act 1992 (Federal).

The Disability Action Plan has been registered with the Human Rights Equal Opportunity Commission.
