Walk to School
Walk to School is a VicHealth initiative which encourages Victorian primary school students to walk, ride or scoot to and from school as often as possible during the month of October.
In 2015, more than 1.2 million kilometres were walked — the equivalent of walking almost 32 times around the world.
Students who participate in the program will be in the running to win great prizes such as and a major prize of an Annual Junior Swim Membership worth $570 from Glen Eira’s Sports and Aquatic Centre. For further details see the terms and conditions.
Council’s Transport Planning Unit is also interested in hearing about traffic related safety concerns that schools see as barriers or that deter children and their families from walking, riding or scooting to school. Following the Walk to School Program there will also be an opportunity for the Transport Planning Unit to undertake more specific road safety audits at a small number of schools. This will allow us to work more closely with those schools to identify possible works to improve road safety and access.
Congratulations to the first 10 schools to register for Walk to School who have won a $300 project voucher to help celebrate the month.
