Benefits of immunisation
Immunisation protects children and adults from harmful infections before coming into contact with them in the community. Immunisation works by using the body’s natural defence system — the immune response — to develop and build resistance against certain infections.
Immunisation is important for two main reasons:
- it is the safest and most effective way of protecting against disease; and
- if enough people in the community are immunised the general level of immunity is increased and the spread of infection is minimised.
